My favorite holiday traditions and winter activities
There’s something magical about the holiday season. Whether it’s the glow of twinkling lights, the cozy mornings spent with loved ones, or the rare chance to slow down and rest, winter always feels like a time to savor. This year, as I enjoy our own holiday traditions and reflect on what makes this season special, I wanted to share some of my favorite traditions and activities — both old and new.
Decorating our home
One of my favorite ways to embrace the season is by decorating the house. Now that we have our own home, this tradition feels even more exciting. I love putting lights in the windows, draping garlands along the walls, and filling our space with little touches of holiday cheer.
Around the time this post is scheduled to go live, we’ll be putting up our Christmas tree. While we’re not religious, we love the tradition of having a tree, with its sparkling lights and ornaments that tell stories of years past. It’s one of those small rituals that makes the season feel complete.
Christmas Eve with family
My in-laws have a rich collection of Christmas Eve traditions that I’ve been lucky enough to be part of. We gather together, of course, and share an incredible meal (as all good traditions should include!). One highlight is reading ’Twas the Night Before Christmas — the full version, not the abridged one! It’s a sweet moment that connects us to each other and the magic of the holiday.
For years, my husband’s grandmother would also read the nativity story from Luke. Since her passing, this part of the evening has become bittersweet. It’s a quiet reminder of the people we miss during the holidays and the love they brought to these moments.
Snowy memories and winter walks
When I lived in Michigan, winter meant snow — and lots of it. The first snowfall of the year would often fall right around my birthday, and I always loved it. There’s something about walking through a snowy landscape, hearing the soft crunch beneath your feet, and watching the world transform into something quiet and magical.
Now that I live in North Carolina, I don’t see snow as often (or at all, some years). But I’m hopeful. There’s nothing quite like a snowy winter day, especially when you can follow it with a warm drink by the fire.
Creating new traditions
Over the years, my husband and I have been building our own traditions. One of my favorites happens the day after Christmas: We go to a bookstore together and pick out a book for each other. It’s a small gesture, but it’s a meaningful way to give a gift we know the other person will truly enjoy.
I love this tradition because I come from a family that’s… let’s just say, not the best at gift-giving. This way, there’s no pressure or second-guessing — just a thoughtful moment to celebrate our shared love of books.
A perfect winter day
If I could design the perfect winter day, it would look something like this: a snowy walk with my camera in hand, capturing the magic of the season with my family by my side. Afterward, we’d warm up indoors, curling up by the fire with a cup of tea (or hot cocoa, if we’re feeling indulgent).
Winter days like this remind me to slow down and enjoy the little moments — the warmth of home, the quiet joy of being with loved ones, and the beauty of the season.
The gift of rest
One of the things I treasure most about this time of year is the feeling of rest. I’m incredibly lucky to work with people who understand the importance of stepping away during the holidays. There’s no expectation to “stay on,” no urgent emails or meetings sneaking into the schedule. It’s a time to truly unplug, and I don’t take that for granted.
For me, rest can look like a slow day spent in bed with my husband and our bunnies, wearing pajamas, and letting the world outside fade away. Sometimes, rest also means doing something creative — like writing this blog post! The balance of ease and creativity is what makes winter feel so restorative for me.
Final thoughts
The holidays mean different things to everyone, but for me, they’re a time to slow down, savor traditions, and enjoy the warmth of home. From decorating our space to creating new rituals with my husband, this season is all about finding joy in the little things and creating memories that last.
As the year winds down, I hope you find moments of rest and connection that fill your heart. And if you’re dreaming of a snowy winter day like I am, here’s hoping it comes your way soon!
