Engagement session prep: Final tips and last-minute reminders

Your engagement session is just around the corner!  You’ve picked the perfect location, coordinated outfits, and planned meaningful touches to make it personal.  Now, as the big day approaches, it’s time to focus on the last-minute details that can help your session run smoothly and feel stress-free.

This post is the finale of my engagement session planning series, and I couldn’t think of a better way to wrap things up than with a list of tips to help you feel ready, confident, and excited.  Let’s dive in!

Last-minute prep reminders

Before you head out the door to your session, here’s a checklist of things to double-check and pack:

  1. Outfits (and backups!):  Make sure all your outfits are clean, wrinkle-free, and ready to go.  Bring an extra outfit or accessory, just in case!  This is especially important if you’re planning to include pets or kids who might make things a little messier.

  2. Shoes and accessories:  Pack comfortable shoes for walking between locations.  You can always swap them out for heels or dress shoes when it’s time to take photos.  And don’t forget jewelry, hair accessories, or any other finishing touches you want to include.

  3. Snacks and water:  Stay energized with a few snacks and a bottle of water.  This is especially important for longer sessions or if you’re bringing kids or pets along.

  4. Touch-up essentials:  Bring a small bag with touch-up items like lipstick, powder, a hairbrush, and extra bobby pins.  If it’s warm, consider bringing a small towel or blotting papers to stay fresh.

  5. Props or personal items:  Double-check that you have any props you’re planning to include, like a blanket, meaningful items, or treats for pets.

  6. A positive mindset:  The best photos happen when you feel relaxed and confident.  Take a deep breath, remind yourself to have fun, and trust your photographer to guide you through the process.

How to get in the right mindset

An engagement session isn’t just about the photos — it’s about celebrating your relationship and creating memories you’ll cherish forever.  Here are a few mindset tips to help you enjoy the experience:

  • Focus on each other:  It’s easy to get caught up in how you look or whether your poses feel “right,” but the best moments happen when you focus on your connection.  Laugh, hold hands, and be yourselves!

  • Embrace the unexpected:  Whether it’s windy hair or a playful pet, unexpected moments can lead to the most authentic photos.  Go with the flow, and don’t stress about perfection.

Remember why you’re here:  Your engagement session is a celebration of your love story.   Let that be your focus, and everything else will fall into place.
