How moving to Durham has inspired my creative journey
When my husband and I moved to Durham in 2017, it wasn’t part of some grand creative plan. In fact, at that point, I didn’t even have an official photography business. We had just wrapped up a year in Philadelphia — an experience we both found less than inspiring — and decided to return to North Carolina, where my husband’s family was based. Little did I know that this move would mark the beginning of a transformative chapter in my creative journey.
Finding inspiration in a city of contrasts
Durham has a way of making you feel like anything is possible. It’s a city that blends the best of old and new, where trendy spots like Brightleaf Square and the American Tobacco Campus coexist with historic neighborhoods brimming with character. Walking through downtown Durham, I’m constantly struck by the energy of the city. Its colorful murals, revitalized industrial buildings, and lively atmosphere seem to tell their own stories, waiting to be captured.
But Durham isn’t just about its urban charm. It’s also home to lush parks and serene outdoor spaces that offer the perfect backdrop for photography sessions. From quiet trails to open fields perfect for a picnic shoot, I’ve discovered endless opportunities to bring my clients’ stories to life. This balance between vibrant cityscapes and tranquil nature has shaped my work in ways I didn’t expect.
My first Durham-centric shoots
Shortly after moving here, I had two opportunities to dive headfirst into Durham’s creative possibilities.
The first was an engagement session for a couple who traveled from a few states away. They were huge Duke baseball fans and wanted to incorporate their love of the game into their photos. I quickly researched photo spots near the stadium and nearby downtown, discovering new parts of the city along the way. The session was a blend of their personal story and Durham’s energy — a perfect example of how this city can be woven into a couple’s narrative.
The second was a project commissioned by my mother-in-law as a holiday gift. She asked me to create a series of art photos showcasing Durham’s personality for one of my husband’s aunts. Jay gave me a crash course in Durham’s history as we wandered the city, and I worked to capture its essence. From historic architecture to iconic landmarks, those photos remain some of my favorites. I still think about turning them into prints and selling them at the farmer’s market someday.
Growth as a photographer
While my growth as a photographer isn’t tied to Durham alone, this city has certainly played a role in pushing me forward. Living in a place that’s equal parts inspiring and welcoming gives me the freedom to explore new ideas and experiment with my style. Whether it’s an urban engagement session or a quiet moment in a local park, Durham offers me a canvas to tell stories in unique ways.
More than anything, though, being in Durham has reminded me of the importance of connection — to the places I photograph, the people I work with, and the creative journey itself.
What’s next on my creative journey?
I’ll admit it: I’m a gigantic homebody and extremely shy. While I haven’t connected with many other creatives here yet, that’s something I hope to change in the future. Durham’s creative energy is everywhere, from its thriving arts scene to its vibrant community of makers and artists. Someday, I’d love to tap into that energy more and collaborate with others who share a passion for storytelling.
In the meantime, I’ll keep exploring, shooting, and letting this city inspire me. Whether I’m working with clients, discovering new photo spots, or revisiting the places that first captured my imagination, Durham continues to shape my creative journey in ways I never expected.
Durham as a muse
Moving to Durham wasn’t part of a grand creative plan, but it became one of the best things to happen to my photography. This city — its charm, its people, its energy — has pushed me to see the world a little differently and to tell stories with authenticity and heart.
If you’re ever in Durham, I encourage you to take a walk through its streets, visit its parks, and let its magic inspire you, too.
