Deanna and Tyquane’s elegant winter wedding at The Barn at Valhalla

Deanna and Tyquane’s December wedding at The Barn at Valhalla in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was nothing short of magical. With its warm wood-paneled interior and a stunning outdoor setting, the venue served as the perfect backdrop for this couple’s elegant yet personal celebration. From their dusty blue decor to the heartfelt moments shared throughout the day, their wedding was a beautiful reflection of their love and individuality.

A venue with a special connection

The Barn at Valhalla is a venue I’ve worked at before, and I love how each couple makes it their own.  For Deanna and Tyquane, the dinner portion of the evening was held under a cozy tent on the lawn, creating a winter wonderland vibe.  The venue had already played an important role in Deanna’s wedding journey, as we used it a couple of months earlier for her bridal portraits.  That session captured the beauty of fall foliage — a vibrant backdrop for Deanna in her elegant gown, contrasting with the wintery blues of her wedding day.

Classic elegance meets personal touches

The wedding’s main color, dusty blue, wove its way through every detail, creating a cohesive and serene aesthetic.  From the florals to the table settings, Deanna’s vision of understated elegance came to life.  The decor also featured subtle winter-themed touches that added to the seasonal charm without feeling overly festive.

What really stood out, though, was how Deanna and Tyquane made the day uniquely theirs.  Every detail reflected their personalities, from the thoughtful gifts they exchanged to the heartfelt moments shared with their loved ones.

Heartwarming first looks

One of the most touching parts of the day was the series of first looks.  Deanna shared a quiet, emotional moment with her father that set the tone for the day, followed by another special first look with their son.  Seeing these relationships highlighted so beautifully was incredibly moving.

The love and emotion didn’t stop there.  Before the ceremony, Tyquane was brought to tears when he opened his wedding present from Deanna.  It was such a genuine moment of love and connection, and I feel so fortunate to have captured it for them.

Overcoming challenges to tell their story

As stunning as The Barn at Valhalla is, it does present some technical challenges for photography.  The getting-ready space is cozy but cramped, and the wood-paneled interior can create a strong orange cast in photos.  Having worked at this venue before, I came prepared to manage these elements.  My goal was to focus on storytelling — capturing moments as they naturally unfolded while using my experience to make the most of the lighting and spaces.

Deanna and Tyquane’s willingness to embrace the quirks of the venue while putting their own spin on the day made my job both easier and more rewarding.  Their outdoor dinner tent was a unique touch, bringing everyone together under the stars in a warm and inviting space.

A night to remember

Once the formalities of the day were over, Deanna and Tyquane’s guests made it clear they were ready to celebrate!  The reception was a lively, joy-filled affair, with the dance floor packed from start to finish.  It was such a delight to see everyone come together to celebrate this sweet couple.

For me, the wedding wasn’t just about the stunning decor or the energetic reception.  It was about Deanna and Tyquane’s quiet yet profound love for each other, the thoughtfulness they put into every aspect of their day, and the joy they brought to everyone around them.

A lasting connection

Getting to know Deanna and Tyquane has been such a privilege. Deanna is an author, and a couple of months after the wedding, I had the opportunity to take personal branding photos for her. It was such a thrill to see one of those headshots featured on her latest novel! Working with clients like Deanna and Tyquane, whose lives I continue to be a small part of even after their wedding day, is one of the things I love most about being a photographer.
