A cozy day with Bri and Rosie: My favorite fall rituals

As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, I’ve been settling into autumn in our new home.  Fall has always been about creating moments of warmth and comfort, and this year feels extra special.  Having moved into our first house this summer, I’m finally starting to think about how I want to make it feel like “home,” especially for the cozy months ahead.

Of course, no cozy day is complete without my two favorite companions:  Bri and Rosie, our beloved bunnies.  Fall has quickly become a time for slowing down, savoring small joys, and creating memories — with plenty of bunny snuggles along the way.

A living room in progress

Our house came with a fireplace, which has been on my “dream home” wish list for as long as I can remember.  While our living room isn’t fully set up yet (moving takes time, doesn’t it?), I’m already dreaming of turning this space into the heart of our home.

This fall, I’m hoping to add Scandinavian-inspired touches to the living room.  Think soft blankets, twinkling lights, and decorations that nod to my Norwegian heritage.  I recently learned about our family’s Norwegian roots thanks to my sister’s 23-and-Me DNA test, and it’s been so fun exploring traditions that reflect that connection.

While I’m not quite ready to burn candles (my overactive fear of fire says otherwise), I’m excited to set up a wax warmer to fill the house with comforting scents.  Combined with plenty of blankets and maybe a warm drink, it’s the perfect recipe for an evening of relaxation.

Family portraits with Bri and Rosie

One of my favorite fall traditions is our annual family portraits, which wouldn’t be complete without Bri and Rosie.  This year felt especially meaningful as it was our first photo session in our new home — and Rosie’s first time participating!  We adopted her in early October, and she’s already become such a sweet addition to our little family.

My friend Stephanie came over to capture these moments, and it was so nice to be in front of the camera for a change.  As a photographer, I know how important it is to have photos where I’m included.  I want to be remembered in pictures, too, not just as the person always behind the lens.

The bunnies, of course, stole the show.  Bri is an old pro at these sessions, and Rosie surprised us all with how comfortable she was in front of the camera.  These portraits will not only go on our holiday cards but also serve as a reminder of this special first fall in our new house.

Bringing in Scandinavian inspiration

This year, I’ve been inspired by the simplicity and warmth of Scandinavian-style decorations.  I love the way they combine minimalism with coziness — soft textures, natural materials, and a focus on creating an inviting atmosphere.

Some ideas I’m planning to incorporate:

  • Plenty of soft, neutral-toned blankets in every room.

  • A wax warmer for seasonal scents (like cinnamon or pine) to avoid the open flames of candles.

  • Subtle decorations like wooden ornaments, fairy lights, and touches of greenery.

  • My favorite gnome-themed Christmas t-shirt — because why not have a little fun with it?

Scandinavian culture emphasizes the concept of “hygge” (coziness), and I love the idea of using fall as a time to create that kind of space.  Whether it’s curling up with a book, sipping hot tea, or just enjoying a quiet evening with Bri and Rosie, it’s all about finding joy in simple pleasures.

Fall rituals with Bri and Rosie

Of course, the bunnies are a big part of what makes fall feel special.  On cooler evenings, I love spending time with them, watching them hop around the living room or enjoy a treat.  Bri has always been curious and confident, while Rosie is still settling in and figuring out her favorite spots in the house.

This year, I’m thinking about adding some bunny-friendly fall decor — like a little cardboard pumpkin house for them to explore or a photo backdrop with fall leaves for fun snapshots.  Creating these moments isn’t just about the photos (though those are always a bonus) — it’s about slowing down and appreciating the warmth they bring to my life.

Final thoughts

This fall has felt like a season of firsts: our first autumn in the new house, our first portraits with Rosie, and the start of what I hope will be yearly traditions for decorating and creating a cozy home.  I’m reminded that it’s not about having everything perfect — it’s about enjoying the process and savoring the small moments along the way.

Whether it’s cuddling up with the bunnies, planning our living room decor, or just taking time to pause and reflect, these rituals make fall my favorite season.  Here’s to many more cozy days ahead, with Bri and Rosie by our sides.
